BLUE-GREEN ALGAE
As reported in the North Bay Nugget on Saturday June 13th. 2009:
The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit warns the public to avoid using water from Wasi lake after a blue-green algae bloom was found in the south end of the lake in Chisholm Township.
The water should not be used for drinking, cooking or bathing.
The blooms have the potential to produce toxins that cannot be destroyed by treating or boiling the water, the health unit said in a media release.
"This may be harmful to human health and the health of animals because these blooms have the potential to produce toxins."
Mike Duncan, manager of enviromental health, said in a media release, "If you draw your drinking water supply from Wasi Lake where algae are evident, it's important to use an alternate source of water for drinking, cooking, washing dishes and bathing.
The health unit advises the public to avoid swimming and other water sports.
